Is Shopify Worth It For A Small UK Business?

E-commerce · Review· 5 min read

Is Shopify the right platform for your business, or another monthly cost before you know what you need?

Use this review and fit check to decide whether its selling tools justify the ongoing commitment.

This article contains affiliate links. If you choose a tool through one of them, Lioless may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This helps support more practical, independent Lioless guides. Recommendations are based on usefulness, not commission.

Worth It When Selling Is The Main Job

This is a review of current features, costs and business fit. The examples below are decision aids, not claims of sales improvements or a new hands-on test.

Why This Matters

Choosing a platform also means choosing how you will run the business behind it. Someone still needs to maintain product information, answer customers and deal with delivery problems.

A good-looking homepage is only one part of the decision. Test the ordinary work and the awkward exceptions before committing to a rebuild.

What You Get — And What To Check

Shopify brings a hosted shop, checkout, product management and inventory together. The UK plan comparison also lists unlimited products and an SSL certificate.

  • Products and stock: check your actual options, bundles and availability rules.
  • Orders: walk through payment, fulfilment and a refund, including who handles each task.
  • Design: start with a suitable theme; price any changes that matter to your buying journey.
  • Apps: identify gaps first. An app should solve a clear requirement, with its cost included.

What The 2026 Updates Mean

Spring ’26 Editions includes expanded Sidekick assistance and storefront-search improvements. Useful updates deserve attention, but check availability and requirements for your chosen plan before relying on them.

What Does Shopify Cost In The UK?

Basic is listed at £25 per month on monthly billing, or £19 per month equivalent when paid yearly. The lower equivalent means an annual commitment.

Basic’s standard online card rate is listed as 2% + 25p. Other payment methods and international cards can cost more; using a third-party payment provider can also add Shopify transaction fees.

Basic does not include additional staff accounts, and checkout customisation is limited. Check these requirements before assuming it is the cheapest workable plan.

The subscription is only one line in the budget. Shopify’s billing guidance explains recurring app charges, usage charges and one-off purchases such as themes.

  • Plan, domain and any essential apps.
  • Payment processing, delivery and packaging.
  • Setup help, maintenance time and applicable taxes.

For a simple planning example, 100 payments of £40 at 2% + 25p would cost £105 in processing. Add a £25 monthly Basic subscription and those two items total £130, before other costs or taxes; this is arithmetic, not a forecast.

Use The Fit Check

Tick a statement only after checking it. This is a practical decision aid, not a score that proves Shopify will work.

When Another Platform Makes More Sense

If appointments, a portfolio or service enquiries dominate, compare a website builder such as Squarespace against those needs. Do not assume you need a full shop because you might sell something later.

If your business already depends on WordPress, WooCommerce is worth evaluating. Its open-source approach offers flexibility, but include hosting, maintenance and extensions in the comparison.

Shopify needs closer technical review if unusual checkout or fulfilment rules are essential. If a necessary requirement remains unresolved, pause the platform decision rather than hoping an app will cover it.

Before You Launch

Use one representative product to test the complete journey. Follow Shopify’s launch checklist and check payment settings, delivery, policies and test orders before opening the store.

If you are moving an existing shop, add product data, customer journeys and URL redirects to your migration plan. A new platform should solve a specific problem worth the work of moving.

Test The Fit Before The Commitment

Start with your hardest requirement and the full ongoing cost. If those work, use the trial to test one product journey, record any gaps and decide whether to continue before committing to a longer plan.

Check the current trial offer, eligibility and renewal price on Shopify’s signup page. A trial is temporary; running a store is a paid commitment.
